3000 Vocab Flashcards (3k Final Solution)

Why make 3,000 vocabulary flashcards?

Regardless of one’s starting point or goal, 3,000 flashcards can go a long way to improving one’s language ability:

Some people have made 40,000 flashcards. This seems excessive. Surely there is much to be gained from making a smaller amount, and less to be gained from such a vast amount. There is also the “anki burnout” phenomenon, where flashcard users get into such flashcard overkill that they “quit anki”. The “3k final solution” is my response to this.

What is the 3k Final Solution?

You make 3,000 flashcards covering vocabulary. For basic language aquisition, these would probably be sentence cards with a vocabulary woYrd. A better strategy, which isn’t really for “language acquisition” but just for learning, is to save pieces of language because of their actual content (eg. quotes or proverbs from books), and learn words incidentally from them. I call these “Guarinian quotes” named after Guarino Guarini, a midieval Latin teacher who recommended this method. He didn’t recommend flashcards, instead, he recommended saving excerpts in a notebook from books, in order to remember important things once the book was gone. Guarnini:

If then, in the course of the reading, saying, a wise and noble action, a quick a a gracious way of living, it seems to me t at hand a little notebook like a faithful make notes of points in the text; in this to your favourite parts without having to if copying things in the notebook causes a reading, you should [not do it].

3,000 is presumed to be just large enough to notice a qualitative difference from any starting point. Any additional learning can be done more easily thanks to this little step up. And it only takes a few months or less, keeping the goal achievable on a reasonable timeline. After 3k, I suggest sticking only to making cards when “convenient,” “easy,” or for “ideas” rather than vocabulary. Consider these “vocabulary levels”.
